In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
