The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
